The Heritage at College View, in Hastings, NE, was proud to partner with the Nebraska Alzheimer’s Association on their first support group in the area for those with early stage dementia. This support group was unique, in that is served those who have the diagnoses, as well as their caregivers. The group met twice a month for a speaker and discussion. During a portion of each meeting, the combined group separated the caregivers and from those with dementia, to discuss those items of relevance to each.
“It was amazing to be a part of”, stated Stephanie Torczon, Executive Director at The Heritage at College View. “Usually support groups are only for the caregiver. But, with this group, we were able to support both situations. The attendance alone told us how important it was to have this group in Hastings.”
Stephanie Torczon, Executive Director and Kathy Nelson, Memory Support Director at The Heritage at College View, were instrumental in getting this group off the ground and running. Amy Birkel of Heritage Communities and Elizabeth Chentland of the Alzheimer’s Association, drove from Omaha twice a month to attend and help with these events.
“It truly was a group effort,” stated Amy Birkel. “One I was proud to be a part of!”
