Montessori principles find a new expression

BELLEVUE: Maria Montessori, Italian founder of the Montessori school of childhood education, stressed independence, freedom and respect for a child’s natural development.
She perhaps did not envision the same approach might work well with adults dealing with dementia.

But the idea is being embraced by managers of the Heritage Ridge Retirement Community at 1502 Fort Crook Road S.

The result is the Portraits program, which strives to restore a degree of independence to Alzheimer’s patients, give them meaningful roles to play in their “memory support” community and restore a sense of self-esteem.  Read more.
