Caregiver Jobs: An Insider’s View of Heritage Communities

At Heritage Communities, it takes a team: nurses, nursing aides, medication assistants, dining service staff, housekeeping staff, drivers, maintenance personnel and more - working together to help keep residents healthy and happy.

We talked to Tracy Novak, a Certified Nursing Assistant/Certified Medication Aide, about what it’s like to work with residents in independent and assisted living.

Q: How long have you worked at Heritage?

A: I have been with Heritage Communities since 2014. I started at The Heritage at Fox Run [in Council Bluffs, Iowa] as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Later, I also became a Certified Medication Aide. When The Heritage at Sterling Ridge opened [in Omaha, Nebraska], I transferred to that community.

Q: What does your job entail?

A: I’ve had multiple roles at Heritage. I was the lead medication aide at Sterling Ridge when it opened. Then I tried a marketing position for a while, but I decided to come back to nursing. I liked having the option to test out a different role, but I realized I have a knack for taking care of residents. It makes me feel good that I can do something to help them.

In my current role, I do multiple things. I create the staff schedule and I also assist residents as needed. That usually involves helping with bathing, getting dressed, walking with them to breakfast – whatever their needs are that day.

Q: What do you like best about working at Heritage?

A: I really like getting to know the residents and building relationships with them. It makes me feel good that I can do things for residents. I also enjoy the people that I work with. The company treats the employees really well, and they give us opportunities to grow. Each year there’s a special dinner for employees who have gone out of their way to help a resident. Last year I was invited to participate. We had a nice meal, listened to a motivational speaker and shared each other’s stories. It was great to be rewarded for touching someone’s life.

Q: What have you learned from this job?

A: I’m a very patient person to begin with, but I’ve learned to be even more patient.

Q: What other skills do you need to excel in this career?

A: Besides patience, I think you need compassion. And above all else, you have to treat others with dignity.

Q: Would you recommend this as a place to work?

A: I have already recommended Heritage to people I know! The company treats you very well. It’s a great place to work.
