What is Independent Living?

Independent living is designed for older adults who want the privacy and autonomy of their own apartment along with the convenience, relationships, and opportunities of community life.

Residents continue to make their own schedules, drive their own cars, welcome guests, and spend their time as they choose. Broadwell takes care of responsibilities such as housekeeping, trash removal, interior and exterior maintenance, and utilities.

That means more time for:

  • Sharing meals and conversation with neighbors
  • Participating in fitness, creative, social, and educational programs
  • Enjoying scheduled outings and transportation
  • Exploring Kearney’s restaurants, shops, parks, and cultural destinations
  • Relaxing at home without a household maintenance list waiting

Independent living and assisted living are available within the same community. If your needs change, our team can help you explore additional support while preserving familiar relationships and routines.

Cook When You Want. Join Us When You Don’t.

Dining at Broadwell is built around flexibility and choice. Every independent living apartment except studios includes a full kitchen, so you can continue cooking favorite recipes, hosting family, or enjoying breakfast on your own schedule.

When you’d rather let someone else do the cooking, restaurant-style dining is just steps away. Join friends in the dining room, select from the day’s offerings, or stop by the bistro for something more casual.

Whether you’re preparing a familiar meal at home or gathering around the table with neighbors, you decide what works for you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Independent Living in Kearney, NE

Independent living can help lower or replace many of the hidden costs of owning a home, such as property taxes, utility bills, lawn care, and repairs. Instead of worrying about unexpected expenses, you pay a single monthly rate that covers these services plus weekly housekeeping and linen services, trash removal, interior and exterior maintenance, three meals daily, scheduled transportation, and full access to our activity calendar and community amenities. There are no separate bills to track.

A typical day may start with breakfast in our private dining room. Right after, you could join a fitness class, go on a group outing, or spend time in the garden. After a delicious lunch, you can meet friends at the coffee shop or take a scenic walk around Yanney Heritage Park. Before the day ends, enjoy a movie night with your neighbors.

Yes. Independent living residents are welcome to drive and park on site. Residents can reserve a spot in our covered outdoor parking garage for $50 / month. For the days you’d rather be a passenger, our scheduled transportation handles medical appointments, errands, and group outings around Kearney.

You keep your neighbors, your routines, and the associates who already know you.

Small pets are welcome at Broadwell. We’ll walk you through the details during your tour.

Independent living usually has one monthly cost that covers your apartment home, services, and shared spaces. Assisted living typically costs more, as it includes additional help with daily activities and access to caregivers 24/7.
